A Way to Love History

I hate history. I am a person who thinks of ways to get average, sometimes I got below average too, and that’s a different story…! I guess most of you who clicked this title link might be a history-hating student. Guess what, I promise you that you will surely love this history. We at Wordist came up with an idea of posting a trivia about Chennai’s history along with some good ol’ photos. I fell in love with this history which I thought would never happen. I am quite enjoying the new found love with the amazingly narrated history and photographs.

This is one of those creative histories which I loved… look at the old photo of Ice House how different it is from the present one.

This is another historic post of Rajaji Salai and the Present photographs of it. Time has made drastic changes.

The Madras Club was founded on May 15, 1832 as a European men-only club. It is the second oldest surviving club in India after the Bengal Club, Calcutta. The Express Estate, which now houses the Express Avenue shopping mall, was till 1947, the original home of the Madras Club. The club moved to Moubray's Gardens on the north bank of the Adyar River in 1963 and is still based there. Ice House was built by Ice King Frederic Tudor in Madras facing the Bay of Bengal in 1842 as part of his ice business. Around 1880, the business collapsed and the building was sold to Biligiri Iyengar of Madras. He remodelled the house, renamed it Castle Kernan and used it as a residence. The Government of Tamil Nadu named the Ice House as "Vivekanandar Illam", during 1963, the Centenary year of Swami Vivekananda. Horse-drawn trams were introduced in India in the early 19th century. The first electric tram service was started in Chennai on 7 May 1895.There were more than 100 trams connecting residential and commercial areas those days. The trams operated over 16 and a quarter miles of road. The daily mileage was approximately 7,000 with the cars carrying daily 1,25,000 passengers on average. One of the main railway terminals of the city, Chennai Egmore railway station was formerly called Madras Egmore. Built on 2.5 acres of land, this station acts as the departure and arrival point for trains connecting Chennai and Central & Southern Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The station’s architectural dome is one of the prominent landmarks of Chennai. The station was initially a fort called as Egmore Redo. The station became officially functional on June 11, 1908. A Black Hole Day

Ah! I can’t decide which is worst, no electricity or unreliable electricity???

This is how we were on Saturday. We worked half a day and we were facing a critical power shutdown. We usually avoid postponing deadlines and on Saturday it was one such day on which we were at the peak of deadline and about to deliver some amazing designs. We had some professional hands on our high power generators, but their efforts were in vain. I guess it’s not a designer friendly generator. Along with the power shut down, we had to face these generator problems too. Our computers started to shut down one by one.

Guys keep calm!

But one good thing on that inauspicious day was the wonderful meeting we had with our Boss. It was a rejuvenating transformation, like we passed through a black hole and reached a whole new universe. Some drastic changes were made in the work process, office timing and other essential aspects. Though we started the day in a bad mood, it concluded with a happy ending and the meeting meant a lot for me.

Chepauk Palace on Wallajah Road near the Marina was the Madras residence of the Nawabs of Arcot, once the rulers of Tamil Nadu. Spread over 117 acres, it was completed in 1768, and is known for its lime mortar, red brick walls, wide arches and intricate carvings. It now houses the Board of Revenue and the Public Works Department of the State Government. Napier Bridge is one of Chennai’s oldest bridges, built over the Coovum River connecting Fort St. George with the Marina beach. This bridge, regarded as an architectural marvel, was built in 1869 by Francis Napier, then Governor of Madras (1866 – 1872). As part of the Marina Beach beautification project, special lights have been fixed beneath the bridge providing a visual effect as if the bridge is floating on the river water. Karl Schmidt memorial is located at Elliot’s Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was built in the memory of Karl Schmidt, a Dutch sailor who lost his life while trying to rescue some people from drowning. The memorial is the only heritage structure on Elliot's Beach. St. George’s Cathedral is a Church of South India built in 1815. The church was designed by Col. J. L. Caldwell, Senior Engineer of The British East India Company's, and his assistant Captain De Havilland finished the construction. St. George’s Church became prominent as the cathedral of Madras in 1835. The reredos is a depiction of the ascension of Jesus Christ sculpted in alabaster, at the top of which stands a black marble statue of St George, the patron saint of England after whom the church is named.

The college was established as Pachaiyappa's Central Institution at Popham's Broadway on 1 January 1842, from money given in Pachaiyappa Mudaliar's will. Marina Beach is a natural urban beach in the city of Chennai, India, along the Bay of Bengal, part of the Indian Ocean. The beach runs from near Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, a distance of 13 km, making it the longest natural urban beach in the country and the world's second longest. In 1880's the then Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff gave a major facelift to this beach and after which it started becoming a major tourist centre.
