Chennai Suburban Railway is a commuter rail system in the city of Chennai, operated by the Southern Railway, one of the operating railway zones of Indian Railways. The work for suburban train services started in the year 1928 and became operation in the year 1931. On April 2 1931, Sir George Fredrick Stanley, then Governor of Madras, inaugurated the electric suburban railway service between Madras Beach and Tambaram. The suburban services were opened to the public on 11 May 1931.
