Horse-drawn trams were introduced in India in the early 19th century. The first electric tram service was started in Chennai on 7 May 1895.There were more than 100 trams connecting residential and commercial areas those days. The trams operated over 16 and a quarter miles of road. The daily mileage was approximately 7,000 with the cars carrying daily 1,25,000 passengers on average. At midnight on April 12, 1953 the tram service of the Madras Electric Tramway in Madras City ceased to operate. #besurprised #Historytoday #Chennai #Madras #History #trams
