Mylapore is a cultural hub and neighbourhood in the southern part of the city of Chennai. Mylapore is also called Thirumayilai. It was historically known as Vedapuri.
The word Mylapore is derived from Mayil arparikum oor, which means "Land of the peacock scream". Historically, peacocks have been known to thrive in the area. Mylapore is one of the oldest residential parts of the city. Tiruvalluvar the celebrated author of Tirukkurl, the World-famous ethical treatise, lived in Mylapore nearly 2,000 years ago.
